How to Get Your SaaS Recommended by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity (GEO Guide)

By Bisyri, founder of IndieDaddy · · 6 min read

Quick answer

AI assistants recommend products they can find, understand and trust. To improve your chances, make your site crawlable with clear pages that state exactly what the product does, for whom and at what price; publish honest comparison and FAQ content; add structured data and an llms.txt file; keep your name and description consistent across reputable directories, reviews and articles; and earn mentions on sites that AI tools cite. There is no guaranteed placement, but these steps make accurate recommendations far more likely.

People now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini questions like "what's a good tool to track subscriptions?" or "best Product Hunt alternatives for indie makers". If your product is not part of those answers, you are invisible to a growing group of buyers.

This practice is often called GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). This guide explains how assistants pick products and what you can do about it, honestly, without promising things nobody can promise.

How AI assistants decide what to recommend

There are two broad ways an assistant knows about your product:

  1. From training data. Models learn from large amounts of public web text. If your product was widely and consistently described before a model's training cut-off, it may "know" you. You cannot control this directly, and it updates slowly.
  2. From live search or browsing. Many assistants now search the web when answering, then summarise and cite sources. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude with web search work this way. This is where you can make a difference quickly.

In both cases, the assistant favours information that is easy to find, easy to understand, consistent across sources, and backed by sources it trusts.

Step 1: Make your site easy to crawl and understand

  • Allow AI crawlers in your robots.txt unless you have a reason to block them (for example GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot). Blocking them reduces the chance of being cited.
  • Render key content in HTML. Pages that only show text after heavy JavaScript can be hard for crawlers.
  • State the basics plainly on your homepage: what the product does, who it is for, key features, pricing, and how it differs.
  • Use descriptive headings that match how people ask questions.

Step 2: Write answer-shaped content

Assistants extract passages that directly answer a question. Help them:

  • Start important pages with a one-paragraph direct answer.
  • Add an FAQ section with real questions and concise answers.
  • Use tables for comparisons (features, pricing, who it is for).
  • Include dates and sources for facts, so the content looks current and verifiable.

Every guide on this blog starts with a "Quick answer" box for exactly this reason.

Step 3: Publish the pages buyers ask about

Create pages for the questions that lead to recommendations:

Question people askPage to create
"Best tools for [job]"A guide to solving the job, honest about options including yours
"[Competitor] alternatives"A fair comparison page
"[Your product] vs [competitor]"A head-to-head with a table
"How much does [your product] cost?"A clear pricing page
"Is [your product] good for [use case]?"Use-case pages

Step 4: Add structured data and llms.txt

  • Structured data (schema.org) such as Organization, SoftwareApplication, Product, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList helps machines read your facts.
  • llms.txt is a proposed standard, introduced by Jeremy Howard in 2024, for a plain Markdown file at /llms.txt that summarises your site and links to key pages for language models (llmstxt.org). Support varies between AI companies, but it is cheap to add and makes your key facts easy to read. IndieDaddy publishes both llms.txt and a longer llms-full.txt.

Step 5: Be consistent everywhere

Assistants cross-check sources. If your product is called three different names with three different descriptions, they get confused or skip you.

  • Use the same product name, one-line description and category on your site, directories, review sites, social profiles and press.
  • Keep pricing consistent and up to date.
  • Update old listings when you change positioning.

Listing on reputable directories helps here because it creates many consistent, crawlable descriptions. See best startup directories.

Step 6: Earn mentions on sources assistants trust

Assistants with search tend to cite well-ranked, well-linked pages: established publications, popular community threads, review sites and high-quality comparison articles. That means classic link building and PR also help AI visibility:

  • Get included in "best tools for X" articles.
  • Answer questions in communities where your users ask them.
  • Collect reviews on review platforms your buyers use.
  • Publish original data that others cite.

Step 7: Make your product available to agents

AI agents increasingly act, not just answer. Products that expose a public API or an MCP server can be used by agents directly. Launch platforms with MCP servers also let agents read catalogue data. If you build with AI agents, you can launch with an AI agent, and agents connected to IndieDaddy can search published products by task. Read what is MCP for founders.

How to check where you stand

Ask several assistants, with web search on and off, questions your buyers would ask:

  • "What are the best tools for [your job]?"
  • "Alternatives to [competitor]"
  • "What is [your product]?"

Note whether you appear, whether the description is accurate, and which sources are cited. Those cited sources are where you want to be mentioned. Repeat monthly; answers change.

A simple llms.txt you can copy

Place a plain Markdown file at https://yourproduct.com/llms.txt:

# YourProduct

> YourProduct helps freelance designers send invoices and get paid on time.
> Pricing: free for 3 clients, Pro $12/month.

## Key pages
- Features: https://yourproduct.com/features
- Pricing: https://yourproduct.com/pricing
- YourProduct vs Competitor: https://yourproduct.com/vs/competitor
- Help center: https://yourproduct.com/help

## Facts
- Founded 2026 by [name]. Based in [city].
- Works with Stripe, PayPal and bank transfer.
- Not for: payroll or accounting.

Keep it short, factual and current. The "Not for" line is surprisingly useful: it stops assistants recommending you for the wrong job.

A monthly GEO routine (30 minutes)

  1. Ask three assistants the same five buyer questions, with web search on.
  2. Record whether you appear, how you are described, and which sources are cited.
  3. Fix any wrong facts at the source: your site, your directory listings, your review profiles.
  4. Pick one cited source you are missing from and try to get included (an update request, a review, a helpful comment).
  5. Publish or improve one answer-shaped page for a question where you did not appear.

Over a few months, this small routine compounds: more consistent facts, more citations, and more accurate recommendations.

What not to do

  • Do not stuff pages with keywords or hidden text for AI. It makes content worse for humans and machines.
  • Do not publish fake reviews or comparisons. Assistants and readers lose trust fast.
  • Do not promise customers "ChatGPT ranking". Nobody can guarantee it.

Frequently asked questions

Not in organic answers. Some AI products may introduce ads or sponsored placements, but organic recommendations depend on what the assistant can find and trust.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

For assistants that search the web, improvements can show within weeks once pages are indexed and cited. Training-data knowledge updates only when new models are trained.

Does llms.txt guarantee AI visibility?

No. It is a proposed standard with uneven support. It is a cheap, helpful addition, not a guarantee.

Is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily. Good SEO (crawlable pages, clear answers, quality links) is the foundation for GEO. GEO adds emphasis on answer-shaped content, consistency across sources and citations. See AEO vs SEO vs GEO.

Should I block AI crawlers?

Only if you have a specific reason, such as protecting paid content. For most SaaS marketing sites, allowing them increases the chance of accurate recommendations.
